CLINTON FIREFIGHTERS PREPARE FOR NATURAL DISASTERS AND TERRORISTS ATTACK
Four firefighters with the City of Clinton Fire Department have recently completed training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), in Anniston, Alabama. The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally-chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction(WMD) training facility in the nation. The CDP develops and delivers advanced training for emergency response providers, emergency managers, and other government officials from state, local, and tribal governments. The training offered at the CDP focuses on incident management, mass casualty response, and emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act.
In this class, Cpt. Darrick Dugger, Lt. Bradley Allen, FF Daniel Adams, and FF A.J. Harris, culminated at the CDP's Chemical, Ordnance, Biological, and Radiological Training Facility (COBRA). The COBRA is the nation's only facility featuring civilian training exercises in a true toxic environment using chemical agents. The advanced hands-on training enables the responders to effectively prevent, respond to, and recover from real-world incidents involving acts of terrorism and other hazardous materials. At this training the members of the Clinton Fire Department worked with live agent such as anthrax, ricin, blister agents, and nerve agents. The threats faced by the nation's emergency responders are diverse, deadly and complex. There is growing concern that chemical, biological, explosive, radiological or other hazardous materials will become terrorists' weapon of choice. By participating in this training, and working with responders all across the nation has given the members of the fire department a better understanding of the growing threat of terrorism and for natural disaster. This information will be shared with other emergency responders to expand the ability to combat these hazards. At the end of the class, the group used their training in a live scenario, mass casualty exercise conducted by Homeland Security and FEMA.
Several members of the Clinton Fire Department have participated in these types of Homeland Security classes in the last couple years. Although it is the shared hope this kind of hazard will never present itself, the Clinton Fire Department wants to be able to better mitigate any situation presented. The Clinton City staff along with Fire Chief Archie Brummitt, support the need for advanced level training for emergency preparedness. The fire department would also like to thank Ray Varner Ford for offering transportation to our firefighters while away at this training.
